Sian Grinter Secures her First Finance Director Role in a Successful Law Firm

“GrowCFO helped me realize that I already had most of the transferable skills required to simultaneously make the step up, switch sectors and deliver a broader role outside of my comfort zone.”

Sian Grinter secured her first Finance Director role in 2022 whilst participating in GrowCFO’s Future CFO Programme and being an active member of the GrowCFO community. Bracewell LLP is an international law practice with an impressive global reputation.

Bracewell LLP is a leading law and government relations firm that provides innovative solutions to facilitate transactions and resolve disputes. They needed to hire a Finance Director who could fit nicely into their culture and take on a broad range of responsibilities spanning both finance and operations.

Selecting the right candidate

For over 75 years, Bracewell has focused on delivering superb service and sophisticated insight. They are proud of their spirit and reputation for excellence, which is anchored on four pillars. These include an authentic culture based on personal relationships, collaboration and a shared passion for the firm and its clients.

They needed to hire a Finance Director with strong technical skills, the right personality to fit well into their existing culture, and an ability to navigate challenging conversations.

Why Sian took the role

Sian felt that it was the right time in her career to step up into a Finance and Operations Director role. This provided three new challenges simultaneously: stepping up into a senior role, broadening her role to include operations, and switching into the legal industry sector.

Upon joining, Sian inherited a team spanning both finance and operations, and plays a significant role in supporting both the UK and international businesses. Sian understood the need deliver at her new pay grade and dedicate more time towards strategic thinking, rather than constantly doing tasks.

How GrowCFO helped

GrowCFO’s Future CFO Programme gave Sian the confidence to recognize that she was ready to deliver her first Finance Director role and helped her to avoid any feelings of self-doubt. Sian really benefited from the combination of online courses and mentor-led workshops. These helped to clarify the steps required to move up into the role, the importance of allocating her time appropriately, and the need to make the right impact during her first 100 days. Sian now works very closely with the Managing Director and makes a valuable contribution across a wide range of activities.
